Now that the calendar has flipped over to 2012, I can start my new challenge. I am calling it " 2012 - the year of the solid".
I have been collecting solids for some time so that this year every quilt that I start will only use solids. There are so many yummy solids around at the moment, don't you think? I hope my challenge will be lots of fun and move me out of my comfort zone.
The rules I have made for myself are that quilts that have been started prior to 1/1/2012 will not be restricted to solids. But new quilts will have to conform to the challenge. Those quilts can be Amish, two colour (for instance red and white - how clever of me to include that parameter!), modern, applique, etc Really, anything goes except for a pattern or tone on tone fabric being in the quilt top.
I have been looking forward to this challenge for a few months now but wanted to wait until the beginning of the year to start. Such a challenge suits me much better than trying to control my fabric purchases, or desire to start new projects and I think it will be fun.
Speaking of new projects...well here is one that was a new project less than 2 months ago and is already close to completion. It is Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay mystery quilt that you must have been reading about everywhere in the blogosphere.
I weighed all the units for my quilt and they came in at close to 1kilogram! They fit in a box similar in size to a shoebox. Looking at my fabric stash I realise I have many, many kilos of fabric.
Thanks to Bonnie for helping me use 1kilo in such a nice manner. I love how my mystery quilt has turned out.

I'm so glad to see how yours is turning out. I'm using the same colors as you and I haven't been home this weekend to see how it looked when put together. I was a bit worried so thank you for showing me that it looks lovely! LOL

I also LOVE working with only solids, finished an Amish quilt some days ago and today arrived two patterns of GORGEOUS Amish quilts that are in the Lancaster museum. The patterns even came with the quilting stencils....... But first I want to make some doll quilts;
That sounds like an interesting challenge. Not sure I would be able to stick to it but I am thinking about a red and white done in solids and that would be quite a change for me. I do love my prints!
My grandmother used solids almost all the time. Just last night my son went through all my quilts until he found one in particular, a solid aqua and red. It's always been his favorite. My challenge is to use the material I have already bought and inherited.

I love your colors for Bonnie's Orca Bay! I used different colors to and am so please with my outcome. Of course, you and I have to change the name of our quilts; can't be Orca Bay without the black and white Bonnie used. I'm calling mine Azalea Bay for the purple, green and pink I used. What will you call yours? Great job BTW!

I love your best of 2011 list, Yes the R & W was spectacular. I'm taking a 2 day Abstract in SOlids workshop with Gwen Marston in May. Not all my pieces will be done in solids, but whatever I do from her class certainly will be. Good for you for staying on task with the Ocra Bay quilt, so much piecing in her patterns.
Your solid stash is beautiful! And I love how your mystery quilt is turning out. I was using green and red with black but the green faded out on me so I've been replacing them with blues. Now I like how the green works with the browns...but no, I am not making a second quilt!

That is quite a challenge you have set for yourself. It would be enough of a challenge to me to put just one solid in every new quilt in 2012. I love prints too much to avoid them for a whole year. I will be very interested to see what you create throughout the year.
LOVE the colours in your mystery. Did you realise you have orientated your string squares differently to how Bonnie intended? Bonnie shows the stitched lines in the squares pointing towards the ligher Ohio stars.

LLiz, I LOVE your version of the Ocra Quilt, mystery ala Bonnie Hunter. Nw I KNOW what I can do with my pinks. I am not a pink person, but you know quilters ... over time we do amass many colors.
