Hexagonia

After a lengthy hiatus and thanks to  Cyndi I am able to start back on my 5/8ths" hexagon portable project.

The side edges measure 16" and the greatest width is 31" across at this stage.  I am making it up as I go and ran out of the background fabric in March.  Cyndi, angel that she is, hunted around and found some more for me.  I count myself extremely lucky.  The back of these things always intrigue me,  so if you feel the same way you may be interested in this

The intention is to hand quilt it, so I have been paring back the seam allowance after sewing.  Somewhere I read that this is a big no-no, but since I use at least a dozen topstitches to put each edge of the hexagons together I am hoping it should be strong enough.  Opinions on this are not only welcome, but desired.

Juggling projects is always a problem for the unrepentant starter that I am.  I managed to finish another quick, basket  block from the Beyond the Cherry Tree Album quilt.

Finally, while I was out and about last week I caught sight of the New South Wales state government trying to make a quick buck.

I know we are almost bankrupt, but selling our state (Mitchell) library is going one step too far!

I think your hexagon project is gorgeous. You are doing a great job of making it up as you go! Wow!
At least somebody in the government has a sense of humor.

I am happy for you that found more of the background fabric, I can't wait to see this finished :)
block looks great!
wouldn't that library make a great quilt shop/studio?

From an earlier post you made - I to like to explore blogs, checking them out but never making comments. Need to start.

Love your 5/8 inch hexies - I have a 1.5 and a 1 inch going (or at a standstill or done). Just need to decide how to finish them. The 1 inch is just all different colored scraps - where the 1.5 have flowers with the white fence and some green leaves. Think I would like to start a bigger planned hexie that I saw in a magazine. Just need to find the magazine.

So many projects I see that I want to do. . . . Will bookmark your site to follow the progress of your hexie quilt.

Your hexie project is amazing! I have just started with hexagons but mine don't look nearly as nice as yours! Love them!!

Your hexies look great...I miss the old libraries. Our county just built a new one with lots of computers and big windows...very functional but doesn't have the old book smell and lumpy chairs...

So glad Cyndi was able to find your background fabric so this lovely project does not stay on the bottom of the UFO heap. It certainly deserves a finish!

Theory must be if you don't trim some of the allowance is caught in the quilting? I trimmed mine and I think you will be happy you did too. I have a couple old hexie tops not quilted - I'll have to look at the backs...
Thanks for sharing!

Love the hexi's. I didn't trim mine back and I'm going to hand quilt it. I know some places are going to be a PITA. I've started a star and ran out of mojo on it, so it hangs on my studio wall!

Well done Cyndi! The hexies are looking great! Once you finish the circuit what next? Love the applique block and the unrepentant starter idea - can I join or is it an exclusive club?

Glad Cyndi found the background fabric because this is a beauty! I'd like to start a new hexie project but have promised myself I will finish the one already started first. In the meantime I'm thinking about what I will do. Thanks for showing the back - don't have any advice, but what Dawn says makes sense.
Your cherry tree block looks great - love the fabric you are using for the basket.

Love that hexie quilt! 5/8ths are my favorite size to use. I have never ran across anyone else who uses that size before! The quilt on my profile picture is 5/8" hexies. It is a pattern i designed in honor of 25 years of living in the midwest with my hubbie. If I use anything larger, I feel like it is giant! I'd love to know how this quilt is progressing for you...it is so pretty!
