S is for ...

These blocks  are so old they almost need to be carbon dated.

I can't remember when I started putting the red and yellow half square triangles together, but it was certainly last century.  The book by Judy Hooworth and Margaret Rolfe excited me

and I started the project on the cover.  But you know how things are...it soon was put aside for an even more stimulating project (that I can't remember at all!) and really only came out of the cupboard on the occasional clean up spree.

As we all know, quilts are full of memories.  This one is no exception.

My husband went to Adelaide on an overnight trip to help out a friend.  While he was there he called the LQS and asked them for all their red and yellow fat quarters.  A couple of hours later, when ringing to see if he could collect them, he was surprised to hear they were still cutting!!  What an unexpected treat.

Times have changed and so has my taste.  I no longer want the quilt on the cover.  After fiddling around with the blocks I was happy with the "S" pattern but the two tone look didn't appeal any more.  A couple of rebels were made.   This time around I think there will be a finish, particularly since my younger daughter, Sarah, claims I have never made a quilt especially for her.

It is still up on the design wall but I want to put a border on, with some floating "S".  Dear blog friends,  I would love it if you would help me decide on a colour for the border.

My first reaction was black--but then I love black (with different-colored floating Ss). I guess it would help to know what your daughter likes. After all, it is especially for her.
It is a very creative use of a "once-upon -a-time" project. I love saves like that!

My first thought was - gosh, I don't know, but then I thought there's got to be a Kaffe fabric out there that would really tie it all together. I love the red background. I have a daughter named Samantha...hmm....

I really like the red and yellow blocks, they look 'S'assy. I also thought a black border would look good.

I love the brightness, and how the blue and green S's really pop out among the yellows! It's very fun, and so I think that a bright blue dotty or striped border would be killer!

Yes, a blue-based Kaffe with lots of green and red in it, or something black. That's what popped to my mind.

I couldn't begin to advise you on a border but it is nice to see those lovely blocks will see the light of day once more. Lucky daughter!

I love the addition of the bright blocks. My first instinct was to say no border, but if you want to put one on to make it bigger, I think Sarah should decide which she like most as it will be her special quilt :0)

I'd go tiny accent green border and then deep, deep red wider border and throw a few more rebel blocks in for good measure. Love it and the best news is it is yours through and through! Inspirational! Lucky Sarah!

I think you should go for a blue as that would stand out on this quilt. But you should ask your daughter as it is for her.

What about a double border, black & white stripe (vertical) with lime green ot turquoise? Or, no border B&W stripe diagonal cut binding and a wildy colored royal blue floral back? or...love playing with fabric...
Great fun project for a lucky DD

Love your rebels. Isn't it fun to change direction and come up with something completely different?

How about thin inner border of blue and/or green with outer border of much larger HSTs in reds and yellows to form the S's, echoing the center of the quilt but on a different scale? Maybe an occasional S in blue and green.

It looks as if you've got some great advice about the border colors, which is good because I am terrible at just coming up with a suggestion without being able to see the colors.

Love your S blocks -- what a good save for an old project. One of my sisters is a Sally, and I think she would love this pattern.

I vote for a lighter border--yellow, green or blue--with red binding.
